I don't believe Cold supports Unicode yet.  As a result, strings are
converetd as single byte characters.

You might want to suggest to Bruce that Unicode support would be worthwhile.
Beyond that, I think your only option is to build your unicode strings byte
by byte in a  buffer as raw data.
