How about this, as a suggestion (code idea, but no code included)

Assuming we are not promiscuous (i.e. everyone can connect their 
server), we have a list of servers and their inter-server ports.

for instance:

colddark chimaera.declab.usu.edu 6699
phoenix hobbes.slip.net.pitt.edu 6611 
GregCold greg.hudson.mit.edu 6688

(note, those addresses probably don't work)

and then when I need to, I send a connection to that port if I need to
connect.  If there is no port listed, then we use the default (say, 6677)
