Since Gregg Vesonder is paying me to build Espresso, it's probably up to him whether we can release it as a reference implementation or not.

well, cool, two client implementations (and in fact there'll be at
least one more).  presumably the Espresso client would be harder to
make available as a reference implementation due to release issues?
(and on that subject, are we going to have to work to make dave's spec
officially unproprietary?  never mind that it's been sitting on a
university web site for months....)
